Doc, the main character in my current IR book, Inherent Vice, is constantly smoking pot or doing some sort of drug. Again and again, he is high at times when he shouldn’t be. In order to avoid intense social interaction or talking about something he does not wish to, Doc will even act like he is high. Doc claims that because of most peoples’ prior knowledge that he is a pothead, he just has to pretend that he is contemplating a weed-infused idea in his head and the conversation will either end or take a turn to where he wishes it to go. His clothes often have an effluvium; therefore it is hard to tell if Doc had just lit up or if the smell had stayed with him from repeated use.
Doc’s disposition is very neutral and calm at all times as well. This type of personality probably stems from his continued drug use and the fact that this personality was very popular in the 70s. Doc’s house is usually slovenly as well, which also plays to his pothead personality, as most people who visit him would not expect clothes to be put away and books on shelves when they arrived. Due to his carefree personality, Doc seems to be very naïve when it comes to business dealings. Many people have come to his office asking for favors and explained to Doc that they could not pay him up front. This does not seem to bother Doc, probably because he was high at the time of the dealing and because of his personality.
